Surely it is one of the small cameras on the market today that has the best value for money.
It is commonly found on the market around the hundred Euros, depending on the kit you take.
The package comes to you at home is well cared for and the design does not seem a chinoiserie. My I busted just looked like this.
To upgrade the firmware, first you need to download the latest version from the website.
You have to enter the first digit of the serial of your camera and automatically you can download the latest firmware.
Start downloading a file with .bin extension.
Once you downloaded you can just rename it firmware.bin and save it in the root of the micro sd you normally use.
At this point make sure you have the full battery, insert the micro sd and turn the Yi.
The red LED will start flashing and the small Xiaomi will emit a repetitive beep, leave work without touching anything until it turns off automatically.
At this point, remove the memory card and delete the update files, now you can re-use your Xiaomi Yi with the updated firmware.
Now I would start with some photos from the app you can set the camera to take pictures in low, medium and high quality, going from a minimum resolution of 5 megapixel and a maximum of 16 megapixel, there are no raw files but only jpg.
You can then go and decide whether to add on each picture the date, time and weather when connected to a smartphone.
A feature that could come in handy is the reduction of the fish eye due to the wide angle, at the cost of a slight cropping of the image (lens rectification).
This is the initial screen seen by the app on android.
This is a snapshot 16-megapixel done indoors in the house with only the domestic light then lit in low light. Below is a crop to 100%. Logically, the noise and the image quality is not a lot but remember that is not set up to take pictures.
This however in light conditions a bit best.
If we talk about videos you can go to set the resolution from a 480 pixel at 240 frames per second slow motion useful for up to the 2K (2304x1296) at 30 frames per second.
I normally use the full HD 1080 P (1920x1080) at 60 frames per second a good compromise, the video does not become heavy and allows you to make some small recovery in slow motion.
It is also possible preset settings to get timelapse either as a series of photographs taken at preset intervals and then we mount by hand in a video both as video created automatically by the machine.
Here you will find some of my video I made during my honeymoon in South Africa. They are all at 1080 P 60 fps. I applied stabilization automatic youtube images that creates some artifacts. You'll see them better if you go on youtube, remember to set the maximum resolution if your PC allows.
Here I put some videos from youtube without any correction.
The first shot in the house with a small light on, the picture is fairly the painful sound and you hear the rustle due to the fact of having the WiFi switched on.
This can slow it down because it's filmed in 480P with 240 fps so it can be reduced by about 10 times.
This on maximum resolution available with the update to the latest firmware.
Lastly, the same video shot to my normal resolution, 1080P at 60 fps, this too without any youtube correction. I made a little salute to the late judge for yourself if the audio passes sufficiency.
Conclusions and personal considerations. When I unpacked immediately gave me a good impression as attention to detail and the packaging, then when I tried to do the first photos and the first video I was going to send it back, there was a stain on the upper left very evident sensor in all conditions. Unfortunately I arrived the day before the start of the trip to Africa so I postponed. Arrived in Johannesburg after the first video, the stain is gone, do not ask me why. The video quality is very good even if compared to other handycam much more high-end.
The only problem left is the sound quality which is really painful. In the Internet there are guides to try to improve it, a solution is to remove one layer of sponge or foam on the microphone, to date I have not tried it yet because you have to remove in toto the small room.
Another problem concerns the audio there is that if you forget lit the wi-fi connection while shooting a video you can hear a buzz in the background. Here too essitono internet guides to resolve the problem. It 'also true that this kind of cameras are born to be locked inside an enclosure and then the sound is almost always excluded during assembly.
Here you will find a video guide for groped to solve problems related to audio.
If you still want to find a small defect to the Xiaomi Yi is the limited availability of options such as hermetic enclosures, brackets to mount it on helmets or hulls etc etc ... I still I have taken a 15 € on ebay and to date has not been damage.
In conclusion if you want a good compromise between quality and price are content with a little bit on the audio side there are no other machines that are able to keep up.
